Observation Narrative
Vegetation in this plot is a south slope northern hardwood stand. Scattered among second growth maples (Acer saccharum and A. rubrum), black cherry (Prunus serotina) and white ash (Fraxinus americana) are large individuals of red oak (Quercus rubra), red maple and sugar maple (including one 111 cm dbh)-- veterans which survived logging in the 1920s. Many stumps and fallen boles of American chestnut (Castanea dentata) attest to that species former importance to the stand. A future dominance of sugar maple is suggested by that species' abundance in the lower in the lower tree and shrub layers. Measured trees in plot (dbh in cm.): Acer saccharum (111, hollow, rotted heartwood), Quercus rubra (73, good condition), Acer rubrum (70, good condition), Fraxinus americana (63, divides into two trunks at @ 2 m.)
