Observation Narrative
The plot is located on a rich, northeast facing, high elevation slope. This habitat supports extensive stands of northern hardwood forest characterized by basswood (Tilia americana), blue cohosh (Caulophyllum thalictroides) and other nutrient demanding species. The forest is relatively young and the landscape is scarred from cable logging operations in the 1920s. Heavy deer browse impacts have greatly influenced the composition and vigor of herbaceous and lower woody layers. Measured trees in plot (dbh in cm.): Tilia americana (46,43,53), Acer saccharum (49,39), Prunus serotina (75), Quercus rubra (34).
