Observation Narrative
The vegetation of this plot represents the richer northern hardwood communities dominated by yellow birch (Betula allegheniensis). These typically occur on the lower, often talus covered ravine slopes. This area was logged in the 1920s and the trees are young. Some die back mortality of both yellow and sweet birch (Betula lenta) was conspicuous in the stand. Sugar maple (Acer saccharum) appears likely to become a future dominant or co-dominant as the stand matures. Heavy deer browse has decimated herbaceous plant populations in the area. Measured trees in plot (dbh in cm.): Betula allegheniensis (42,40,45), Fraxinus americana (51), Acer saccharum (32), Betula lenta (34).
