Observation Narrative
This plot documents a rather rich northern hardwood community occupying slopes bordering small ravines below the summit of Allegheny Mountain. The forest is relatively young and the landscape is scarred from cable logging operations in the 1920s. Regenerations on this slope currently features sugar maple (Acer saccharum), black cherry (Prunus serotina), black birch (Betula lenta), red oak (Quercus rubra), and cucumber tree (Magnolia acuminata) also present. A number of nutrient demanding species are present in the herbaceous layer. Some die back mortality of beech (from beech bark disease) and birches was noted on the slope and deer browse impacts on herbaceous plants and shrubs were severe. Future development of this stand appears to be toward an increasing dominance of sugar maple. Measured trees in plot (dbh in cm.): Acer saccharum (55,43), Prunus serotina (55), Fraxinus americana (43,42), Acer rubrum (45).
