Observation Narrative
The northern hardwood forest in this plot is a young (ca. 50-60 year old) stand which has developed following railroad logging and subsequent fires in the 1920s. Currently, black birch (Betula lenta) is the most abundant tree in a mixed stand with red maple (Acer rubrum), sugar maple (Acer saccharum), red oak (Quercus rubra), black cherry (Prunus serotina) and yellow birch (Betula allegheniensis). Beech (Fagus grandifolia) is prominent in the lower tree and shrub layers and is the potential climax dominant on the site.
