Observation Narrative
Picea rubens trees are tall, healthy and reproducing abundantly along the small, spring-fed stream that runs through the plot. Betula allegheniensis seedlings are abundant in the herb layer, although this species is absent from the tree layers of the stand. Two distinct microtopographic habitats, each with its own set of herbaceous components, are present in the plot: the boggy braided stream channel dominated by Carex spp., Glyceria melicaria, Osmunda cinnamomea and Viola cucullata, and the low, somewhat poorly drained terraces bordering the channel and overwhelmingly dominated by Vaccinium angustifolium and Lycopodium dendroideum.
Plot located at headwaters of Slabcamp Run, just downslope from Slabcamp Run Trail, 0.2 mi south of its junction with FR 106.
Duff layer is very deep (>20 cm) in marginal areas of the plot under red spruce trees.
A = gray brown silt with extensive whitish mottling and clay concretions.
