Observation Narrative
Plot location: Broad floodplain at bend in South Anna River, 0.2 miles ESE of where it crosses Louisa/Hanover County line.
Hummock and hollow microtopography/ flat aspect.
A narrow plot configuration (10 X 40meters) was centered along an elongate, backswamp slough. The plot mostly encompasses seasonally flooded habitat but includes approximately 1-2 meters of somewhat better-drained floodplain terrace on each side. The forest vegetation has a Quercus phellos-dominated overstory with quite diverse understory. Carex spp. And Cinna arundinacea are characteristic herbs of the seasonally flooded slough, while Viola cucullata, Polygonum virginianum, and other mesophytes inhabit the better drained terrace. The creeping exotic Lysimachia nummularia is problematic here.
