Observation Narrative
Despite the lack of topographic complexity, the upland deciduous forest at Hickory Hollow exhibits moderate compositional variation. This plot captures an acidic oak-hickory phase co-dominated by Quercus alba and Carya pallida, which is evidently the most abundant hickory at this site. Ilex opaca forms a dense understory. The ground layer is sparsely vegetated and contains primarily scattered woody plants.
Stake A stands ca. 1.2 m from Carya pallida (62.5 cm dbh) which is larger than any present within plot.
0 - 1 - litter
1 - 8 - dark brown sandy loam
8 - ~55 - light brown loamy sand; clay content increases below ca. 25 cm
~55 - by this depth soil has become dark orange-red clay loam, which grades to nearly pure clay
