Observation Narrative
Plot location: steep, narrow ravine ca. 0.8 miles W of William and Mary Hall.
Field estimate from topo: (UTME): 346905 (UTMN): 4126654.
The plot is situated in a very steep and narrow, rich ravine and includes a small area of seepy ravine bottom. Since neither side slope could practically accommodate a 400 sq. m.. plot, the centerline (25 m long) was run down the bottom and the lower to middle portion (8 m up) of each slope was included. The overstory of Quercus alba, Fagus grandifolia, and Fraxinus americana was somewhat open due to crown damage from Hurricane Floyd (1999). Herbaceous growth is quite lush and includes several species unusual for the region: Aruncus dioicus, Asarum canadense, Desmodium glutinosum, D. pauciflorum, Panax quinquefolius, and Solidago flexicaulis.
