Observation Narrative
The soils here are perennially saturated due to seepage. Water in the soil pit came to within 20 cm of the surface often in a few minutes. The plot area, being situated adjacent to a floodplain, appears to be flooded on an infrequent basis. This flooding might be responsible for enhanced community trophic conditions. pH of the water in the soil pit was 7.5. Additionally, the high pH and soil fertility may be the result of subsurface marl deposits.
Plot location: Plot is situated along eastern edge of Powhatan Creek's swamp, ca. 0.1 miles N of Rte. 613 - plot is rectangular and situated parallel to upland edge.
