Observation Narrative
Diverse, extensive freshwater marsh between two tidal channels along Four Mile Creek. Estimating cover is problematic; Typha angustifolia is clearly the most abundant species, but abundant associates are numerous. For some species (e.g., Aster puniceus, Kosteletzkya virginica) cover values may have been inflated to better reflect high total vegetative cover. For others early senescence (Schoenoplectus novae-angliae) or cryptic appearance (Leersia oryzoides) may have resulted in underestimates. Abundance of Typha angustifolia may indicate eutrophication. Marsh surface is somewhat uneven, but no distinct hummock-and-hollow microtopography exists. Less than 1 cm of standing water present at 10:20 AM.
Wet, silty muck; organic matter content not especially high; becomes somewhat more firm with depth, but overall there is little change in texture or consistency
