Observation Narrative
Surprisingly diverse and distinctly homogeneous marsh between tidal channel and stunted tidal hardwood swamp forest containing Acer rubrum, Nyssa biflora and Alnus serrulata. Biomass of annuals -- chiefly Impatiens capensis and Bidens spp. -- is especially impressive and obscures cover of already senescent graminoid culms, particularly Typha angustifolia and Acorus calamus, the latter of which may be more abundant than it appears. Early senescence of Polygonum sagittatum and P. arifolium confound the estimation of cover. A slight but pronounced elevation gradient runs from the channel inland, and the higher surface may explain the profusion of Bidens coronata, P. sagittatum, and Impatiens around corner 4. Given elevated position above the channel, this site may not flood entirely with every tidal cycle. Low, more open spot (2-3 sq. m) near corner 2 supports Pontederia cordata, Echinochloa walteri, and most of the Amaranthus cannabinus and Polygonum punctatum. Very thick rhizome mat suggests that Typha angustifolia and other rhizomatous perennial graminoids are not recent invaders of this stand.
