Observation Narrative
An impressively robust stand of Bidens laevis (in full bloom) beneath taller, scattered Zizania aquatica occupies extensive reaches of marsh along the west side of Turkey Island Creek. Bidens is absent, however, from the outermost 5 m or so of the marsh edge, where the surface is lower and Pontederia cordata, Peltandra virginica, and Leersia oryzoides share dominance. In this plot Leersia and Murdannia keisak are likely the early-season dominants; both have now largely senesced and hence cover is difficult to estimate. The substrate is characteristically firm for an interior high marsh. No surface water present at the time of sampling (2:00 PM), but the water table is located just below surface, as indicated by compaction of soil from trampling. Plot is located ca. 10 m from a small, newly discovered population of Aeschynomene virginica.
