Observation Narrative ? Plot located near the center of Big Pond, a natural, seasonal draw-down mountain pond on saddle 0.25 mi NNE of Kelly Knob. The pond opening is surrounded by a rim of Ilex verticillata and a low red maple-black gum forest with extensive sphagnum mats. Fresh, vigorous flowering condition of the dominant vegetation indicated that the pong had probably drawn down in early summer. A core was taken from this pond in 1989 and analyzed. Weathered rock rubble was encountered at 171 cm. A bulk radiocarbon date for the 162-166 cm depth was 10, 410 +/- 140 year bp.
