Observation Narrative
A springy, hummocky stream headwaters supporting a mixed red spruce hardwood forest. The shrub layer of this forest is exceedingly dense and quite diverse; Rhododendron maximum is the clear dominant, but ten other shrub species are present. Despite some mortality of canopy sized trees, red spruce is reproducing well and is prominent in all sub-canopy layers of the stand.
Plot located in Mountain Lake area, at headwaters of Maple Flats Branch on upper south slope of Potts Mountain, ca. 0.6 mi WSW of the junction of Rt. 613 and the Appalachian Trail where Rt. 613 crosses the crest of Potts Mountain.
Very deep organic matter/duff with dense root mats on hummocks.
A= (in slight hollow) dark, blackish brown silty clay loam with whitish gray mottles at 10-15 cm below surface.
