Observation Narrative
Secondary northern hardwoods in which Acer rubrum, Prunus serotina var serotina and Quercus rubra are the most abundant canopy trees. This stand is similar to secondary northern hardwoods of the high Allegheny Mountains in NW VA and eastern WV, except that Fagus grandifolia is absent. An abundance of young Acer saccharum var saccharum in sub-canopy layers suggests successional change toward future dominance of that species.
Plot located in Mountain Lake area, on north slope of Potts Mountain, just below Rt. 613 at a point 0.5 mi northeast of where it crosses the crest of Potts Mountain.
