Observation Narrative
Rich forest on north facing side of a steep cove on soils derived from calcareous bedrock. I believe this to be an old age stand based on partial cores of larger trees in stand, all of which have heart rot and are fire scared. Trees of ~96 cm dbh occur ~1 per 0.1 hectare. Trees >0 cm dbh about 6 per 0.1 hectare. Stumps (out) and small debris of Castanea lead me to suspect chestnut salvage cutting here and Liriodendron could of course have been high graded out a century ago. The relative unimportance of Liriodendron here compared with many other rich coves in the area which were clearcut where it is always dominant also suggests this stand was never extensively logged. Cover values estimated as if leaves were fully expanded.
Plot located ca. 2.7 km south of Wildcat Summit, ca. 30 m west of pull-off on FR 294, and ca. 30 m downhill and north of trail along Limestone Ridge crest.
