Observation Narrative
The plot is located ca. 0.25 mi south of Sulpher Spring on a very steep, sheltered, mesic slope strewn with bouldery colluvium from upslope limestone/dolomite outcrops. A rich forest composed of nutrient and moisture demanding species has developed here and is representative of communities in calcareous coves and hollows of the Staunton Creek area. Due to the very rocky soil environment, the lithophytes Cystopteris bulbifera and Sedum ternatum are very abundant members of the herbaceous stratum.
