Observation Narrative
Located in a rather dry, rocky habitat, this plot is situated ca. 0.2 mi SSW of Sulpher Spring and represents the remarkably diverse, forb rich forests occurring on the south and SW facing slopes of Staunton Creek Gorge. Physiognomy of the stand varies from nearly closed to quite open and woodland like. Because of enhanced soil nutrient regimes contributed by underlying limestone or dolomite (the exact formation is uncertain), many herbaceous plants more typical of mesic habitats grow well in this environment.
