Observation Narrative
Plot located at the downslope edge of a dry, rocky woodland associated with small, but extensive outcrops of Greenbrier Limestone on the SE flank of Little Stone Mountain, ca. 0.8 mi NE of Big Stone Gap. The outcrop band and community extend for at least half a mile along the middle slope of the mountain, grading into a more mesic forest on the bouldery slopes below. Dominant trees throughout are Fraxinus americana, Carya ovata and Quercus rubra. Acer saccharum is thinly scattered through the stand and the community is noteworthy for the absence of Quercus muhlenbergii, normally a dominant tree in this type of habitat. Noteworthy diagnostic species here include Frangula caroliniana, Solidago rigida, Liatris aspera and Helianthus hirsutus, which is exceedingly abundant.
