Observation Narrative
Plot located on bench of cliff, ca. 0.6 mi east of Jasper. Slope shape is directly convex. It includes a nearly level area at the base of a cliff and then abruptly slopes to 45 degrees. A lower cliff lies below the plot. The limestone appears to be very hard, fracturing to sharp angles. It is light gray (5YR 7/1 on Munsell Chart). Surprisingly, the soils derived from this rock (on steep colluvial slopes) do not appear to be especially fertile. Nutrient demanding plants were conspicuously absent. The population of Philadelphicus hirsutus here is absolutely phenomenal with tens of thousands of plants present. Similar vegetation on the cliff benches to the north also support Carex eburnea and Symphoricarpos albus.
