Observation Narrative
The vegetation in this plot is a dry, open forest/woodland that is associated with a mid-slope band of Greenbrier limestone outcrops on the SE facing slope of Little Stone Mountain, ca. 0.1 mi north of FR 283, 1.6 mi NE of Big Stone Gap, and 1.1 mi east of Stonega Lookout. Fraxinus americana and Carya spp. are very prominent trees in this vegetation, which is also noteworthy for the absence of Quercus muhlenbergii, normally a dominant tree of dry, limestone habitats. The plot area features a massive population of the uncommon (S3) grass Diarrhena americana, colonies of which cover large areas of rocky mountainside.
