Observation Narrative
The vegetation here is part of a dry, open forest/woodland associated with a mid-slope band of Greenbrier limestone outcrops on the SE facing slope of Little Stone Mountain, ca. 100 m north of FR 283, 1.8 mi NE of Big Stone Gap, and 1.3 mi east of Stonega Lookout. Fraxinus americana and Carya spp. are the prominent trees; the more typical dry limestone tree Quercus muhlenbergii is curiously absent. The plot represents a variant of this ash-hickory vegetation in which Polymnia canadensis and its relative Smallanthus uvedalius are abundant.
