Observation Narrative
A Pinus rigida and Rhododendron maximum dominated sandy, "hanging valley" bottom with a small first order stream meandering through. Codominant (in places) Pinus virginiana in the overstory is an odd feature of this community. The prevalence of pitch pine and dominance of the tree understory by hardwoods suggests that this is a pyrogenic community. The shrub and tree canopies are occasionally broken by small, saturated, seepy openings dominated by herbs and mosses. The seeps on the north side of the stream support a more nutrient-demanding flora than those on the south side.
Seedlings of Pyrularia pubera, Euonymus americana, and Anemone quinquefolia are restricted to higher microsites in plot, 2-3 ft higher than most of the plot.
Plot located just south of Laurel Fork, ca. 1.0 km ENE of eastern end of Keoke Lake.
