Observation Narrative
A Quercus montana-Carya-Pinus echinata dominated woodland with an herb layer both prairie like is aspect (with Sorghastrum nutans dominant) and co-occurrence of a number of species (e.g. Pityopsis graminifolia, Eupatorium album) common on Virginia's coastal plain, but uncommon in or absent from the mountains. This community is about 70 ft. wide and perhaps twice to 3 times as long, running along the uphill edge of stunted Pinus echinata-dominated woodland, between it and a less open Quercus prinus dominated woodland or open forest in the saddle upslope. It is thus in an environmental transition zone, but floristically distinct from communities on either side. It is remarkably species rich for pine-oak communities on Pine Mountain, with 70 vascular taxa. The rare orchid Cleistes bifaria is here. Its presence supports the hypothesis that fire is important to maintenance of this community. Mesophytic Liriodendron's presence suggests that soils are too mesic for openings to be edaphically maintained.
Plot located 0.75 mi WNW of Skegg Hole.
Measured trees (dbh in cm.): Quercus montana (68.5), Carya alba (26.3), Liriodendron tulipifera (52), Pinus echinata (25). Trees measured using Bitterlich prism method. See original plot form for raw data.
