Observation Narrative
Past cutting has been sparse to none on this steep, rocky, north facing slope, resulting in a magnificent old growth forest of wind and ice deformed trees. Lower vegetation layers are quite rich and made noteworthy by the presence of several species more normally found in seepage habitats. The Appalachian Trail, which passed through this habitat, has recently been re-routed upslope. Betula allegheniensis in plot measured: 70, 69, 41, 35, 27 cm dbh. Dominant Betula and Quercus rubra 10-15 meters tall and 60-75 cm dbh.
