Observation Narrative
Plot located in same stand as that sampled in JGNF503. This sample may provide additional information, however, regarding both the structure of the woody component of the vegetation and compositional variation within this seepage wetland. Aster acuminatus, Cimicifuga cf. americana, and Saxifraga micranthidifolia are all restricted to or much more abundant in the upper portion of the plot, whereas fern cover is higher in the lower part of the plot. The plot does not seem to have captured the dominance patch of Veratrum viride which Rawinski et al. (1996) reported, but considerable senescence of this species had already occurred by early August. Soil is permanently saturated and contains abundant gravel, cobbles, and organic matter. Time and darkness precluded measuring soil depth and topographic indices and the taking of photographs.
