Observation Narrative
Plot in a virgin hemlock forest several acres in extent. The substrate is primarily boulders through which flows a below surface stream/seeps. The soil atop the bouldery matrix is organic and probably poorly decomposed, promoting acid (and shade) tolerant herbs and shrubs. Virtually all the larger hemlocks are either already dead or will soon succumb to the adelgid. The seldom seen diminutive orchid, Listera smallii, exists here, growing in dense shade beneath Rhododendron catawbiense. Measured trees (dbh in cm.): Tsuga canadensis (117.1).
