Observation Narrative ? Quercus montana exists primarily as multiple stems from single root stock, reflecting past fire no doubt. Poorly decomposed duff covers most of the ground surface, resulting in a scarcity of graminoids and forbs. Below the plot, on the disturbed mineral soil of the Appalachian Trail, one finds Viola pedata, Liatris graminifolia, etc.
