Observation Narrative
This plot captures patchily wooded barren vegetation just below the ridgecrest of Sinking Creek Mountain. Pinus rigida, Quercus montana, and Diospyros virginiana appear to be the most characteristic arboreal species. The ground layer consists of a mosaic of graminoid mats (comprising Carex pensylvanica, Danthonia spicata, and Deschampsia flexuosa), exposed bedrock (typically covered with crustose and foliose lichens), and bare mineral soil (nearly pure sand). Early leaffall of overstory shrubs (especially Diospyros) may in part reflect drought stress.
Dense fog precluded the measurement of McNab's topographic indices.
