Observation Narrative
A small stand of characteristic pine-oak / heath woodland at and just below the ridgeline at Johnsons Creek NAP. Fire scars abound, and a few stumps are present. Saplings of Pinus virginiana and P. pungens may have been confused, and the latter may be much more abundant than reported. Bare shale fragments are relatively uncommon in plot, at least where ericaceous cover is high, but patches devoid of ericads and Cladina (but with other lichens) are prevalent outside the plot. Many dead or evidently stressed stems of Kalmia latifolia and Vaccinium stamineum are present. Bryophyte cover included in summation to unity for surface substrate because most lichens occur on soil surface where no litter is present. Soil is exceedingly nutrient-deficient.
From flagged Quercus prinus: 6.7 m @ 8 deg to stake A. This witness tree has a broad, spreading crown and stands downslope from a cluster of Pinus virginiana seedlings growing in a gap next to the ridge trail.

2 - light brown, very fine-textured clay with abundant gravel-sized shale fragments; soil in module 8 is darker, almost reddish-brown and clay tends to form somewhat larger clods; in places there is a distinct A1 horizon (zon
