Observation Narrative
Plot located in the southeastern corner of Johnsons Creek NAP. Sampling was designed to capture what was perceived to be a smaller and poorer quality shale barren, but quantitative analysis has indicated that this stand is better considered a montane acidic woodland with some shale barren elements (most notably Eriogonum allenii) present. Plot was limited to 400 sq. m in order to capture more open physiognomy; residual modules 4-7 would have captured more dense vegetation with a more substantial ericaceous shrub layer. Upslope vegetation grades to denser stand of Pinus virginiana, which may warrant recognition as a distinct community type.
