Observation Narrative ? The original vegetation here was swamp forest with perhaps open vegetation only along the stream channel and at seepage sites. Evidently, forest vegetation is very slow to recover here due in part to frequent killing frosts in this large basin (classic frost pocket phenomenon). Rhododendron catawbiense was still flowering on this late date in the wetland. Possibly a case of retrogressive succession. High diversity of conifers in this wetland including Pinus pungens in swamp forest. Plot located near southern edge of the most open boggy wetland. Note [GPF]: slope shape estimated from topo map.
