Observation Narrative
Plot documents one of Virginia's only occurrences of Abies fraseri forest, which is confined to the Mount Rogers- Wilburn Ridge area. Compared to almost all other stands in this area, this stand occupying the summit area, close to the highest elevation in Virginia, has less admixture of Picea rubens and has suffered much less mortality as a result of balsam woolly adelgid and/or air pollution. Excellent fir recruitment is evident here, with saplings and seedlings abundant under nearly intact canopy.
Plot located ca. 90-100 m southwest of the summit of Mount Rogers on the gently sloping crest of the mountain.
