Observation Narrative ? Habitat and vegetation of this plot is typical of stream terraces bordering the headwaters of Whitetop Creek on a large, midslope bench of Whitetop Mountain. Mixed canopy trees of Betula alleghaniensis (to 35 cm. dbh) and Picea rubens (to 49 cm dbh) are relatively young and several recently deceased specimens of birch are located within the plot. Shrub layers throughout habitat are dominated by dense thickets of Rhododendron maximum. Plot located on eastern slope of Whitetop Mountain, on low flat between the headwaters of Whitetop Creek and Forest Service road to summit, 0.8 mi southeast of Elk Garden.
