Observation Narrative
Plot documents an impressive, mature, Tsuga canadensis dominated "acidic cove forest." Relatively large Tsuga (some exceeding 100 cm dbh) extend for at least 0.2 mi along Middle Creek and its tributary; Liriodendron tulipifera, Acer rubrum, Nyssa sylvatica and Betula lenta are frequent canopy and understory associates, while Rhododendron maximum dominates the shrub layer. Currently this stand appears to be free of hemlock woolly adelgid.
Eastern portion of the Iron Mountains near Snake Den Mountain. Plot located near the mouth of an unnamed tributary of Middle Creek, just southwest of FR 16, 1.6 mi southwest of Camp.
