Observation Narrative
Vegetation of this site is a second growth northern hardwood forest with mixed canopy dominance by Acer saccharum var. saccharum, Aesculus flava, Betula allegheniensis, Fagus grandifolia and Quercus rubra. The abundance of several nutrient demanding herbaceous species (e.g., Caulophyllum thalictroides, Dryopteris goldiana) suggests that soil fertility is relatively high on this north facing slope. A large portion of the herbaceous growth in the plot was senescent on the date of this sampling; a spring survey would undoubtedly reveal additional species and different patterns of abundance.
Plot located in western portion of Iron Mountains, on upper north slope of Round Top, ca. 75 m below the summit.
