Observation Narrative
Habitat is a high elevation, linear forested seepage wetland. Approximately 50% of the canopy coverage is contributed by trees rooted outside the plot; the other 50% by trees rooted on hummocks along the edges of the plot/wetlands. Because of hummocky, braided microhabitats and variations to depth of the water table, some heterogeneity of soils and vegetation is typical of these communities. Hummocks support a few upland species (e.g. Eurybia chlorolepis) that are not characteristic of the wetland vegetation.
Plot located on upper southeast slope of Whitetop Mountain in sloping seepage area just downslope from the Appalachian Trail at a point 0.1 mi northeast of parking area on Forest Service road to summit.
Two profiles taken.
0-11 cm= organic rich muck 0-4 cm= coarse gravel
>11 cm= coarse gravel. 4-15 cm= fine gravel mixed with muck
15+ = large cobbles, stones and channery at water table
