Observation Narrative
Plot documents a mixed, high elevation acidic cove forest occurring on the bottom and terraces along a valley stream headwaters. Except on the small stream bottom proper, Rhododendron maximum forms an extremely dense shrub layer; some of its stems (up to 10 cm dbh) are quite mature. Despite having relatively high diversity for this type of community, the herbaceous layer is very sparse.
Plot located along headwaters of Fox Creek just north of Rt. 603, ca. 0.1 mi east of parking area for the Grindstone - Mount Rogers and Flat Top Trails.
