Observation Narrative
A beautiful rich, mixed hardwood forest with tall, well formed trees. Tilia americana var. heterophylla, Fraxinus americana and Acer saccharum var. saccharum are the canopy dominants here. Even at this relatively late date of sampling, the herb layer was lush and many nutrient demanding plants (e.g., Caulophyllum thalictroides, Hydrophyllum canadense, Sanicula odorata, Solidago flexicaulis, Uvularia grandiflora and Viola canadensis var. canadensis) were in evidence. A spring survey would probably reveal a number of additional species.
Plot located on northwestern slope of Elk Garden Ridge, ca. 75 m east of Rt. 600 and ca. 0.2 mi south of a hairpin turn west of Daves Branch.
