Observation Narrative
Plot location: bluff along the James River, 0.6 mi. S of Norwood.
This site is a very steep, NW-facing bluff overlooking the James River. Cool, sheltered conditions here favor a nearly pure stand of Tsuga canadensis. Except for a few trees 25-43 cm DBH, most stems of Tsuga are < 25 cm DBH, and appear to represent a stand that regenerated following disturbance. The presence of scattered Pinus pungens and Pinus virginiana, as well as charcoal in soil on the bluff top above the plot, suggest that fire may have impacted this site in the past. The shrub and herb layers of this stand are very sparse and species richness is extraordinarily low (n = 13).
