Observation Narrative
The habitat is one of several steep, convex, southwest facing slopes fronting the Kerr Reservoir upstream from its confluence with Bluestone Creek. The vegetation here appears to be a xeric oak-hickory woodland with a partially open canopy maintained by edaphic conditions. Under the thin stand of somewhat stunted Quercus stellata and Carya spp., the grass Piptochaetium avenaceum forms solid stand, giving the community a savanna like appearance. Although the underlying rock is Buffalo Granite, the prominence of species such as Cercis canadensis, Ostrya virginiana, Hypericum prolificum, Hexalectris spicata suggests a calcareous or mafic substrate. Trees measured (dbh in cm.): Quercus stellata (44.7), Carya ovata (38.1), Carya glabra (23).
