Observation Narrative
Plot is representative of oak-hickory forests accruing over Abbeyville Gabbro in a several acre area of Charlotte Co. The stands are generally young to medium age and perhaps somewhat fire suppressed. In many spots, under dense canopy and shrub layers, herbaceous species are sparse and lianas such as Vitis rotundifolia cover the ground. The vicinity of the plot is somewhat more open and has impressive floristic richness for such a dry upland habitat. Many regionally restricted, mafic indicators are present (Salvia urticifolia, Blephilia ciliata, Polygala senega, Matelea decipiens, Hypericum denticulatum, Solidago ulmifolia, Allium cernuum, Ruellia purshiana and Triosteum angustifolium).
