Observation Narrative
Habitat is a poorly drained bottomland with alluvial hardpan soils derived from subacidic substrates (probably siltstone of mudstone). Hydrophytic oaks tolerant of seasonal flooded, clay substrates dominate the vegetation. A strong hummock and hollow microtopography formed by braided, seasonally flooded channels of the broad bottom allows herbaceous species of varied drainage requirements to grow. The community type is common in forested bottomlands along the Dan and Banister River where they cross a Triassic basin east of South Boston. Measured trees (dbh in cm.): Quercus lyrata (93), Quercus phellos (90.5), Quercus palustris (62.5).
Plot location: W. edge of Gibson Creek Bottomland, ca. 1.2 miles NNE of Rt. 726 bridge over Banister River.
Rock Types Present: Triassic siltstones, mudstones, shale.
