Observation Narrative
The habitat and vegetation of this plot is typical of a series of a long, linear sloughs occupying the back edge of the Hyco River floodplain. Conditions are similar to the slough documented in Plot #1 from this site except that the annual flooding depth (as determined from water marks on the trees) is about 40-45 cm. Species richness and microtopography diversity is somewhat greater in this plot. Canopy coverage is thin (estimated at 60-65%) and stand physiognomy approaches woodland status. Noteworthy plants occurring here include rare sedge Carex lupuliformis and several species disjunct from the coastal plain: Triadenum tubulosum, Ludwigia glandulosa and Boltonia caroliniana.
Plot location: In slough edge near south edge of Hyco R. Floodplain, 0.55 miles SE of US 501 bridge and 0.35 miles west of Mayo Creek.
