Observation Narrative
A typical mixed hardwood forest of subacidic, submesic ravine slopes in the southern Piedmont. Stand is maturing second growth of higher than average quality. Fagus grandifolia dominate in all layers, including the herbaceous one (where huge numbers of Fagus seedlings occur). The importance of Carya ovalis in this plot is somewhat atypical of the stand as a whole. Due to the presence of a very large (100 cm. Dbh, 36 m. tall) specimen in the plot area.
Plot location: Slope along E side of Cargills Creek, 0.5 miles S of Rt. 632 bridge.
Rock Types Present: Phyllite and slate.
