Observation Narrative
Plot location: ravine 120 m S of US 360 and just E of the Roanoke (Staunton) River floodplain, opposite Clover Landing.
Although the base status of soil samples is rather low (except for Mn levels), this mesic, east-facing ravine slope supports lush forest vegetation containing many putatively nutrient-demanding plants. The overstory contains a mixture of Acer barbatum, Quercus rubra, Carya spp., and Liriodendron tulipifera, with Fagus grandifolia prominent in the understory. The herb layer is characterized by an abundance of leafy forbs and ferns, like Cimicifuga racemosa, Podophyllum peltatum, Polystichum acrostichoides, Phegopteris hexagonoptera, and Adiantum pedatum.
