Observation Narrative
Plot location: floodplain on N side of Roanoke (Staunton) River, 0.3 miles WSW of Rt. 92 bridge.
The plot is centered along a shallow, backswamp slough near the inner edge of the broad, Roanoke River floodplain. Maximum flooding depth in hollows is ca. 25 cm, as determined by water marks on trees. The habitat was nearly drawn down on the date of sampling. Vegetation is a closed forest of large Quercus phellos (up to 109 cm DBH) in association with much younger Liquidambar styraciflua, and Fraxinus pennsylvanica. Ulmus americana and Ilex decidua are abundant in the understory, while Carex spp. And Elymus virginica characterize the herb layer. Exotics, particularly Lonicera japonica, Lysimachia nummularia, and Poa trivialis, are problematic invaders.
