Plot location: flatwoods 1.0 mile WNW of jct US15 and Rt 699.
Based on the presence of local depression ponds and observations made during the winter and early spring, this flat upland appears to have a hardpan subsoil. During wet periods these flats may become somewhat waterlogged, but soils are very dry and hard during much of the summer and fall. The vegetation is a scrubby, open forest characterized by Carya spp., Quercus alba, Quercus stellata, Fraxinus americana, and Juniperus virginiana. The shrub and herbaceous flora is fairly diverse, with swards of Piptochaetium avenaceum and Scleria oligantha contributing much of the herb-layer cover.
