Observation Narrative
Plot captures mixed tall marsh vegetation which occupies an extensive section of the Western Branch Corrotoman River. Sampling conducted at low tide, but water marks 10-15 cm above marsh surface and silt deposits on emergent vegetation suggest diurnal inundation. Tidal channel at one end of plot is fringed with vegetation of lower stature; here Typha angustifolia is absent and Schoenoplectus tabernaemontani common. The largest extent of marsh east of the river appears to contain a substantial patch (ca. 300-400 sq. m) dominated by Amaranthus cannabinus; a return trip by boat is needed to confirm this observation. Other species noted outside plot include Cicuta maculata, Panicum virgatum, Rosa palustris, Polygonum sagittatum, and Eleocharis cf. fallax.
